What is a Terrarium?

A terrarium is a miniature landscape housed within a glass or transparent container. As they are typically enclosed, they mimic natural ecosystems. Water gets trapped within the space, it then evaporates, condenses on the glass, and drips back down into the soil, to create a continuous natural water cycle. 

This allows the plants to thrive with minimal maintenance, and they can go months without watering.

Sealed terrariums are best suited to tropical plants that enjoy humid, moist spaces - mosses, ferns, Fittonia. Whereas open terrariums create the opposite environment, far to plants that have minimal watering requirements and prefer free draining conditions such as cacti and succulents.

Terrariums have been in use since the 1830s, where they were first used in Victorian plant hunting expeditions to recreate tropical micro climates to keep exotic plants healthy as they travelled overseas.
